Photovoltaic Electricity Panels |
Making electricity for household use with the photovoltaic option has been around for quite a long time now, and it's popularity is increasing as people become more informed. It sounds like a terrific kind of system, and increasingly sought after, but some resarch and a workable project plan is essential before starting such a major project. Photovoltaic solar panels can be manufactured for numerous power outputs, from just a few watts to hundreds of watts. The quantity of output power available largely depends on the area of the panel, which logically indicates that a panel with a high electrical output will be of greater surface area than for a smaller output. A working photovoltaic panel is comprised of quite small individual cells which generate a little amount of electrical power - the higher the amount of cells, then the bigger the panel output. As for disadvantages, one of the pressing problems with this type of solar panel is the high cost, which is due to the production methods, the raw basic materials, and the low energy conversion ratio of the basic transformation process. |

The small cell units making a commercial solar electricity panel are a kind of crystal lattice which is manufactured as a cylinder, and then sliced into small parts. Thin slices of the crystal lattice cells are linked together, fixed flat onto a wooden board support and covered with unbreakable glass. On the rear side of the panel there is a junction box with some electrical connections, whose configuration is decided by the amount of voltage the panel was made for. Photovoltaic type solar panels can be purchased for 12, 24 and 48 volts dc. DC indicates that the electricity produced is 'direct current' - the same kind used by the battery in your car or lawn mower, or the cells found in small electrical gadgets in the home. A working photovoltaic system used for the home will include a control system for converting the electrical power into a.c., or alternating current - this is the kind of electricity used in your home. The system will also transform the volts so that it is the same level as your house supply voltage. A major downside of solar photovoltaic solar systems is that they have an efficiency of only 13% - if a thousand watts of power from the sun falls onto the surface of a panel, only one hundred and thirty watts of electrical power will be generated. The amount energy we can extract from the sun's rays can vary tremendously, depending on the geographical location, but in our example let's say that the amount on average is around a thousand watts for every square metre, and the panels conver only 13% of that amount, then it would be necessary to install a system of photovoltaic panels with a complete area of about eight square metres to produce one thousand watts of solar electrical power - really quite a small amount for the area.
